DESCRIPTION:
This Bohemian dance, the polka, originated in the early nineteenth century in today’s Czech Republic. It is rumored a teenager by the name of Anna Slezak invented it in 1834. The simple, vivacious dance quickly spread to Prague’s ballrooms and when it was perform on stage at the Odeon Theater, Paris in 1840, it became an international sensation.
The word ‘pulka’ in Czech means ‘half-step’.
National Polka Month is focused on keeping this folk dance and its music alive, as well as introducing it to new generations.
